Couple of the Week: Elton John and David Furnish

When the diva settles down we expect quiet parties and sleepy nights. But not so with Sir Elton John, who was knighted in 1998, who enjoys his place in show business, a pal to every celebrity like Victoria “Posh” Beckham and a godfather to 10 children as of March 2006 including Sean Ono Lennon, and Posh and David’s son Brooklyn.
Not really blaming my mother for introducing me to Elton’s music and outlandish appearances, remembering the agonising days when I was young listening to his songs.
Of course, that doesn’t mean Elton was at fault. In defence, he is enjoying almost five decades of his career, has sold 250 millions of records and spawned 50 Top 40 singles. I mean, imagine the number? And this is huge. And this isn’t nothing.
As Elton walked down his friend Elizabeth Hurley, in place of the model-actress’ long-deceased father, down the aisle to wed British-Indian businessman Arun Nayar last Saturday and sang a personalised version of “Your Song,” it took him about five years after his hasty heterosexual marriage to a German record engineer to find true love. Hs reason: he couldn’t deny his homosexualty anymore while struggling to fight off drug addiction, alcoholism and bulimia.
In 1993, he met Canadian-born former advertising executive and filmmaker David Furnish acknowledging that David really helped him cope with his troubles. They were together for 12 years until December 21, 2005 when the two decided to tie the kot on the first day of civil partnerships of gay couples will be recognised in the United Kingdom. The ceremony was a low-key one with only his and Furnish’s parents in attendance.
You have to credit the man for bringing the issue of AIDS into a social awareness spectrum attended by celebrities with the Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation reaching its 15th anniversary.
His parther, although enjoying the limelight, doesn’t seem troubled with the popularity Elton reaps. He is content walking behind his sweetheart.
