Do you remember when Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp were the toast of Hollywood? They were branded the coolest couple in the early 1990s. I wasn’t a fan but my friends were. They were so sad upon hearing that Johnny and Winona broke off their engagement.
What would happen if the two indeed got married? Would they be divorced? Do you think they would have children?
Now that is over Winona’s father, author and editor Michael Horowitz, is open to talk about the relationship. He was asked by Vogue, August edition, to reveal what happened. If not for Winona’s parents and her young age, the union with Johnny could have been pushed through.
In a joint interview with Vogue magazine, Horowitz recalled: “They were the hottest couple in the US at that time, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are now. They were cool.”
Ryder said: “But you stopped a wedding.”
To which Horowitz replied: “We loved Johnny but you were 17.”
Was Johnny upset after the separation?
“We had dinner soon after, and I didn’t get a bad vibe.”
Johnny met Winona at a film premiere and from then on the two were inseparable. They starred in the movie “Edward Scissorhands,” a movie written and directed by Tim Burton. Earlier, Winona starred in another of the cult director’s first film, “Beetlejuice,” as a depressive gothic teenager. Johnny, meanwhile, has befriended the director and starred in many of his movies.
“There’s been nothing in my 27 years that’s comparable to the feeling I have with Winona.”
Five months after their first date, the couple was engaged; three years later they split. A friend of Johnny’s revealed to People.
“He was so desperately in love with Winona that when they broke up, he wouldn’t admit it was over for the longest time.”
What had become of the famous tattoo on the actor’s right biceps, which read “Winona Forever”? It soon had undergone some alterations with the missing “na” on the Winona. It is now read “Wino Forever.” People magazinealso remarked Johnny’s “fiancée fetish.” Before his involvement with Winona, he was also briefly engaged to actresses Sherilyn Fenn and Jennifer Grey.
He must have changed his view after his relationships failed. His engagement with model Kate Moss went down the drain. Since meeting French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis in 1998, the couple will enter a decade of being together. And they aren’t engaged. So far.
